Spring Barbecue
AtWork!
held a Spring Barbecue on Friday, June 27, to celebrate some of AtWork!’s longest
serving clients. CEO Chris Brandt cooked for all, and AtWork! staff helped to
serve the feast at our Issaquah location. In perfect sunny weather,
staff, clients, friends and families enjoyed burgers
and hot dogs (donated by Fischer Meats of Issaquah), bratwurst
and kielbasa (donated by Oberto), macaroni
and potato salads (donated by Mary Shandorf), BBQ beans (courtesy of Rita Cromwell), cookies
(courtesy of Sue Buettner), and Tim’s
Chips (thanks to Charlotte and Tim’s Chips).
A
great time was had by all, and we are looking forward to our Summer Picnic,
which will take place in September this year. Watch this space for details.

AtWork! Receives $42,000 Technology Grant From the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust

News came in late May that the trustees of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust awarded AtWork! a $42,000 grant for computer and network systems upgrade. As AtWork! continues to transform the lives of people with disabilities and create opportunities for community jobs, creating better communication and mobility for those who work out of the office in job sites, volunteer sites and community activities became critical. This generous gift will allow our Employment Consultants to maintain good records, confer with colleagues and stakeholders, and remain in constant communication while remaining in the field providing direct client services.
AtWork! is grateful to the trustees of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for their confidence and support of our mission and transformation to our new service delivery model of Customized Employment.

AtWork! Team joins “Hike for Healthy Kids”
April 26th was a beautiful spring day for a walk. The AtWork! Team joined over 300 walkers for the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club’s annual Walk-a-thon. Sixteen walkers and one dog were proud to carry the AtWork! sign and help the Rotary Club raise money for children’s health projects both locally and around the world. It was a wonderful community inclusion activity and an opportunity for everyone to participate. Our special thanks to Costco Wholesale, Russ Keithly and Rita Cromwell for their support of the AtWork! Team.

Holiday Hoedown
Nearly 200 people gathered to celebrate the season at our Holiday Hoedown at Pickering Barn in Issaquah, December 7th. Thank you to the members of our Celebrations Committee for their hard work in creating a festive and fun party: Mark Russell, Christy Teel, Carrie Jensen, Adele Taggart, Janice Wiberg, Chelsea Howe and Freda Daubert.
Our special thanks go to Costco Wholesale, Rita Cromwell, Winter and Mark Taylor, and Ginger DeWitt for their financial support of the party; Armadillo BBQ for their outstanding food; and the team from Unigard Insurance for volunteering at the event so that our staff, board members, participants and families could enjoy the evening together.

New Truck for AtWork!
AtWork!’s landscaping crew is gathered around the new Ford crew cab
pick-up truck generously provided through a grant from the Employees
Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound.
Our sincere thanks to Boeing
Employees for their generousity in providing a safe and warm vehicle to
transport our crews to their job sites.

Recap of Stakeholder Meeting
On October 24th a committed group of parents, guardians and others who care about people with disabilities gathered at AtWork!’s Bellevue facility to provide feedback to AtWork! staff about how the move to customized employment has impacted the life of the person they care about. Scary Stuff!
This past Halloween, AtWork! was visited by some demons and ghouls who helped us with our assembly and production services.

Puget Sound Labor Agency Builds A Ramp

The ramp leading to AtWork!’s annex building in Issaquah was in
desperate need of repair. The boards were rotting away underfoot and
the ramp was unsafe for wheel chairs, especially heavy powered chairs.
The building is used for offices, meeting rooms and a client resource
room.
The Puget Sound Labor Agency, as a part of their wheel chair ramp
program, took on the annex ramp as their United Way of King County Day
of Caring project. The floor of the ramp was completely replaced with a
new plywood base and resurfaced with Astroturf to make it slip
resistant in wet and freezing weather.
Thank you PSLA for helping to make the ramp safe for clients, staff and volunteers.

Unigard Cleans Up!
Team Unigard came to AtWork!’s Issaquah campus on September 21st, 2007,
as a part of United Way of King County’s Day of Caring. A group of 12
employees from Unigard Insurance in Bellevue spent the day digging
weeds, pruning bushes and trees and spreading bark in flower beds,
working alongside an AtWork! landscaping crew to get the job done.
The improvement is spectacular! AtWork! is very grateful for the willing hands and giving hearts of all involved.
